In 1880, showing great courage and enterprise for the time, Marianne Smith (nee Caughey) established her own drapers and millinery. With the vision of providing the early pioneers of Auckland and beyond with quality merchandise at good value and with impeccable service, Marianne’s store went from strength to strength.
On the back of such success and the increasing prosperity of the business, Marianne was joined in 1881 by her husband and fellow draper William Henry Smith. The following year Marianne’s brother Andrew Clarke Caughey was also invited by the couple to join them and in October 1882 a partnership and Smith & Caughey, Drapers and Clothiers was established. The dedication to ensuring a memorable customer experience, a sense of intimacy and the highest quality of goods on offer at Smith & Caughey’s allowed the business to flourish and entrench itself among New Zealand’s premier shopping institutions.
Today, over 130 years later, Smith & Caughey’s remains one of New Zealand’s best-loved department stores, renowned for its personal approach and attention to detail. A high level of customer service remains their top priority and customer satisfaction is held in the highest regard. At Alert Level 3 orders are being processed and their Contactless Click & Collect service is available from both their Queen Street and Newmarket stores.
Due to processing orders received throughout the Alert Level 4 period, your order will take slightly longer than usual to be available for collection, be assured their teams are working as quickly and safely as possible to facilitate all orders.
As circumstances have caused delays, they have extended their Returns timeframe until
Friday 31 December 2021. Should you need to return an item purchased there will be time to do so.

Contactless Click & Collect is available for online orders! You can now do your shopping online and collect your goods from your choice of their Queen Street or Newmarket stores.
Contactless Click & Collect is a free service and it couldn’t be simpler.
Add your desired items to Cart. During the checkout process select Click & Collect, choose which store is convenient for you. Then complete your order!
You will receive a Ready to Collect email when your order is available to be picked up from your selected store.
This will provide you with the information on how to collect your order via our contactless Click & Collect service.
You must provide proof of ID such as a driver’s license, passport or an 18+ card, and your Ready to Collect email, when you pick up your order instore. Your Ready to Collect email may be presented on your phone or as print out.
Some products are excluded from their Click & Collect service, these will show as ‘not available for Click & Collect’.
